How much traffic do I need?

Practical guidelines for test duration, sample sizes, and low-traffic strategy.

A/B testing needs enough volume for a reliable read.

Practical minimums

Aim for:

  • 100–200 unique visitors per group.

  • 20+ conversions per group.

For a 2-variant 50/50 test, that’s roughly 200–400 total visitors to hit the minimum bar.

How long will that take?

It depends on traffic and split.

If a page gets 100 visitors/day, each group gets ~50/day.

You reach 200/group in ~4 days.

Still run 1–2 full weeks to cover daily variation.

If a page gets 20 visitors/day, it takes ~20 days just to reach 200/group.

Expect multi-week tests.

Low-traffic strategies

If traffic is modest:

  • Test your highest-traffic pages.

  • Test bigger changes.

  • Use fewer groups (50/50 splits are fastest).

  • Be patient.

When testing might not be practical

If your store gets <500 visitors/month, tests will be slow.

At that level:

  • Use qualitative research first (surveys, recordings, competitor analysis).

  • Reserve A/B tests for big decisions (like major pricing changes).
